the institute advanced studies in jerusalem founded in 1975 israeli mathematician aryeh dvoretzky, winner of israel prize mathematics. professor dvoretzky visited institute advanced study in princeton, new jersey, usa several times , inspired him establish ias in jerusalem in 1975. in march, 1976 professor dvoretzky wrote:



the institute similar in concept several existing institutes of advanced study, notably princeton institute. ias in israel fulfill long-acknowledged need appropriate setting encourage scientific , academic leadership, along promoting highest standard of research. proliferation of universities in israel, along overall trend toward mass higher education, has heightened need ias here in israel. inspiration , achievement of these institutes essential strengthening , advancing israel s scientific , academic landscape.



in 1982, yuval ne’eman, professor of physics , minister of science, established first school in theoretical physics @ jerusalem ias. professor steven weinberg, nobel laureate in physics, asked become director of school, , held post twelve years. 4 additional schools established, based on same model, in following fields: economics, life sciences, jewish studies , comparative religion, , mathematics. each school headed preeminent scholar in or field.
