history

today s heitkamp bauholding gmbh has origin in civil engineering company e. heitkamp, founded in herne-wanne in 1892 engelbert scharpwinkel, referred heitkamp. initially, towards end of 19th century, company built canals , roads farmers in neighbourhood.

1902

the son of e. scharpwinkel, heinrich heitkamp, assumed management of still young construction company , expanded field of activity by, amongst others, entering mining business characteristic industry in ruhr area @ time. in following decades, construction activities expanded beyond limits of herne: civil engineering, track , infrastructure construction mining services became main pillar of company. @ time projects included, example, new construction of herne railway station, construction of chemische werke hüls in marl, earthwork, canal , regulation work emschergenossenschaft , lippeverband, beginning of motorway constructions numerous shafting sinking activities regional coal mines (shamrock mine, unser fritz mine , others).

1946 1963

after world war ii, e. heitkamp tiefbaugeschäft in wanne-eickel“ - called @ time - renamed “bauunternehmung e. heitkamp gmbh” in 1946. in addition heinrich heitkamp senior, participators included sons heinrich , robert. following removal of debris, field of activity expanded include other areas. buildings government agencies , deutsche bundesbahn constructed , in fifties, company started providing special mining services underground track constructions. in 1957, heitkamp entered power plant construction sector executing contract westerholt power plant owned hibernia ag. first time, refuse dumps used construction of dams , roads. heitkamp participated in complete expansion of ruhr expressway essen via bochum dortmund in new construction of railway line between gelsenkirchen , haltern see.

this followed participation in construction of henrichshütte 2 steel plant in hattingen power plants “brassert” in marl , “springorum” in bochum. patent issued on 28 may 1958 track-tamping machine developed heitkamp underground track construction. in 1960, heitkamp entered tunnel construction sector when company built erbscheidt tunnel in course of bigge dam construction. in addition, heitkamp awarded contracts construction of federal ministry of defence (germany) @ “hardthöhe” in bonn. @ time heitkamp employed 4000 people.

1964 1980

in 1964, robert heitkamp took on sole management , expanded family company in next decades become 1 of largest construction companies in germany. in same year, heitkamp built first natural-draught cooling tower power plant in ibbenbüren. followed 53 cooling towers in germany , 38 cooling towers worldwide (including australia, america, africa, greece, spain, netherlands etc.). in 1995 , in course of largest individual contract in history of company, heitkamp built 2 natural-draught cooling towers lippendorf power plant, amongst others, , in 1998 highest natural-draught cooling tower in world reaching 200 m @ niederaußem power plant.

1970 1981

heitkamp participated in national , international construction projects included, amongst others, power plant , nuclear power plant projects, infrastructure, civil engineering, structural engineering hydraulic engineering , mining projects.

heitkamp participated, amongst others, in construction of nuclear power plants in brunsbüttel, phillippsburg , ii , brokdorf internationally in construction of nuclear power plants in austria (tullnerfeld / zwentendorf) , switzerland (gösgen-däniken). experience gained in construction of nuclear power plants, heitkamp, along companies hochtief ag , dykerhoff & widmann ag, awarded contract build reprocessing plant in wackersdorf. construction, however, stopped in 1989 political reasons.

in germany, important infrastructure projects included participation in construction of subways in berlin, hanover, bielefeld, dortmund, stuttgart , munich work on bundesautobahn 42, emscher expressway , bundesautobahn 45, so-called “sauerland line”. internationally, heitkamp involved in road construction projects in yemen (sana s – taiz , taiz red sea), in subway construction in vienna , took on technical lead management during construction of first channel tunnel connecting dover calais, later interrupted political reasons.

national hydraulic engineering projects @ time included participation in construction of obernau dam , redirecting of ruhr @ neheim. international projects included construction of hofuf drainage project in saudi arabia , construction of drainage tunnel in venezuela.

heitkamp expanded civil engineering activities - in case turnkey construction services. bridge structures (e.g. 3-bay road bridge zum fürstenmoor“ in hamburg-harburg, emscher bridge in dortmund-deusen, annener berg bridge in witten-annen area) involvement in construction of underground parking @ cologne cathedral , tunnel projects in course of bundesbahn high-speed line kassel-würzburg show heitkamp s participation in civil engineering projects. heitkamp involved in construction of olympic site in munich.

during period, heitkamp involved in construction of technische rathaus” in frankfurt, construction of parkstadion gelsenkirchen, buildings technical university of berlin, work airport extension in frankfurt , hanover langenhagen, construction of lower-saxon state parliament in hanover, hotel constructions (hotel penta , hotel steigenberger in berlin) , construction of hospitals federal insurance fund miners in recklinghausen , bochum clinical centre in münster.

in mining sector, heitkamp involved in construction of shaft tower reinforced concrete “consolidation 3/ 4/ 9” mine in gelsenkirchen , construction of new “an der haard” mine in recklinghausen district. @ time, heitkamp began removal, marketing or stockpiling of tailings ruhr area mines.

the railway construction division executed, amongst others, contract construction of tracks elmshorn-barmstedt-oldesloer-eisenbahn ag. internationally, participated in renewal of railway line between riyadh , dammam in saudi arabia.

dr. alfred herrhausen became first chairman of newly created advisory board.

1981 1999

in 1981, company employed approx. 8,500 people , achieved turnover of approx. 1.1 bn dm. robert heitkamp retired operational business , passed management chair son, prof. dr. dr. engelbert heitkamp.

until german reunification in 1990, heitkamp expanded field of activity in areas of refurbishment, modernization , redevelopment of structures. 1 of first modernization projects included 2 city hall towers in marl in westphalia.

another main pillar added existing activities: formation of subsidiary heitkamp umwelttechnik gmbh in 1985.

because of widespread introduction of mobile phone networks, heitkamp built stations c-net of deutsche bundespost , later private d-net.

heitkamp participated in realization of eurotunnel between calais , dover , nationally in construction of subway , urban railway projects, e.g. in dortmund. deutsche bahn, heitkamp realized several engineering works in area of new line cologne – rhine/main.

during period construction projects included, amongst others: - coating of outer shell of natural-draught cooling tower @ cogeneration plant in völklingen; - natural-draught cooling tower nuclear power plant isar 2 in landshut; - hoheward railway tunnel @ hoheward waste tip in herten; - ice train wash facility deutsche bundesbahn in hamburg-eidelstedt; - subway structures, amongst others, in frankfurt, nuremberg, duisburg , berlin; - participation in construction of 560 motorway, hennef by-pass , bundesautobahn 57 motorway between goch , dutch border; - participation in construction of interim storage facility fuel elements in ahaus; - apartment hotel, administrative building, medical centre supermarket @ ungererpark in munich; - construction of administrative centre veba oel ag in gelsenkirchen-scholven; - participation in construction of daimler-benz administrative centre in stuttgart-möhringen

after german reunification in 1990, heitkamp participated in construction projects 5 new federal states , established offices in chemnitz, dresden, erfurt, magdeburg, potsdam, halle , rostock.

some examples include, amongst others, rebuilding of new synagogue in oranienburger straße in berlin, coating of natural-draught cooling tower in rostock, participation in markt nordseite development in weimar, reconstructions in dutch district in potsdam, participation in siemens microelectronics center in dresden lowering of rheinufer-tunnel in düsseldorf , extension of bundesautobahn 2 motorway in bottrop area.

mining construction activities included, amongst others, coke-side dust removal zollverein coking plant in essen different reconstructions in mining sector in erzgebirge.

in 1999, heitkamp merged deilmann-haniel gmbh. construction activities of both companies combined in bauunternehmung e. heitkamp gmbh while mining activities combined in deilmann-haniel gmbh. civil engineering projects of bauunternehmung e. heitkamp gmbh merged make legally independent subsidiary heitkamp erd- und straßenbau gmbh.

2000 until today

in 2001, activities of former railway construction division transferred independent subsidiary heitkamp rail gmbh.

in 2005, civil engineering departments of bauunternehmung e. heitkamp gmbh combined make independent subsidiary heitkamp ingenieur- und kraftwerksbau gmbh.

due massive drop in orders in mining sector , increasing competition in german construction industry, heitkamp-deilmann-haniel gmbh decided @ end of 2005 take drastic restructuring measures. in course of these restructuring measures, aton gmbh acquired international , parts of national special mining sector – today s deilmann-haniel international mining , tunnelling gmbh. dutch group of companies heijmans acquired heitkamp rail gmbh. in addition, turnkey construction office in ratingen closed along offices in düsseldorf, dortmund, hamburg, munich , stuttgart.

in 2008, heitkamp-deilmann-haniel gmbh renamed today s heitkamp bauholding gmbh.

the heitkamp bauholding gmbh combines following 4 business areas: - civil engineering , power plant construction (heitkamp ingenieur- und kraftwerksbau gmbh) - infrastructure building (heitkamp umwelttechnik gmbh, heitkamp erd- und straßenbau gmbh) - universal construction (domoplan gmbh, heitkamp projektpartner gmbh) - special construction (bum beton- und monierbau gmbh, bergsicherung schneeberg gmbh, bergsicherung ilfeld gmbh)

currently, largest project abroad involves construction of olkiluoto nuclear power plant in finland. in sector of infrastructure building, participation of heitkamp erd- und straßenbau gmbh in construction of lake phoenix in dortmund-hörde 6-lane extension , modernization of motorways – including bundesautobahn 1 , bundesautobahn 2 (including redevelopment of kamener kreuz), bundesautobahn 40 , bundesautobahn 42 motorways - deserves special mention.

in february 2009, jürgen r. thumann, great-grandson of founder of company, took on majority of shares in heitkamp group , has ever since been chairman of board of directors.
