according 1997 census palestinian central bureau of statistics, 98.1% of gaza s residents connected public water supply while remainder used private system. 87.6% connected public sewage system , 11.8% used cesspit. blockade on gaza severely restricted city s water supply. 6 main wells drinking water did not function, , 50% of population had no water on regular basis. municipality claimed forced pump water through salty wells because of unavailability of electricity. 20 million liters of raw sewage , 40 million liters of partially treated water per day flowed mediterranean sea, , untreated sewage bred insects , mice. water-poor country, gaza highly dependent on water wadi ghazza. gaza aquifer used gaza s main resource obtaining quality water. however, majority of water wadi ghazza transported jerusalem.

in 2002 gaza began operating own power plant built enron. however, power plant bombed , destroyed israeli defense forces in 2006. prior power plant s destruction israel provided additional electricity gaza through israel electric corporation. plant rebuilt december 2007. in jerusalem, electricity continued sold gaza according news sources. presently, egypt in talks combine gaza s energy grid own.

solid waste management 1 of key compelling issues facing gazans today. these challenges attributed several factors; lack of investment in environmental systems, less attention given environmental projects, , absence of law enforcement , tendency towards crisis management. 1 of main aspects of problem huge quantities of rubble , debris generated result of israeli bombardments.


for instance, scale of damage resulting operation protective edge unprecedented. governorates in gaza strip witnessed extensive aerial bombardment, naval shelling , artillery fire, resulting in considerable amount of rubble. according recent statistics, more 2 million tonnes of debris generated. approximately 10000 houses leveled ground including 2 13-story residential buildings. tremendous amount of debris remains scattered in gaza. serious efforts , high budget required handle challenge. more importantly, , based on unep study after 2008 war, debris highly contaminated pahs , polychlorinated biphenyls (pcbs), dioxins, , furan compounds.
