the bronx


the design of flag of bronx consists of horizontal tricolor. top band orange, middle band white, , band @ bottom blue, mimicking historical dutch tricolor. in center of flag laurel wreath denoting honor , fame. wreath encircles bronck family arms. shield of family arms shows face of sun rays displayed rising sea, signifying peace, liberty, , commerce. crest of arms eagle facing eastward , wings expanded, representing hope of new world while not forgetting old. text underneath shield motto of borough, , reads ne cede malis, latin phrase meaning yield not evil .


the bronx flag first adopted in march 1912, then-borough president cyrus c. miller, , recognized city on june 29, 1915.
